I recently had the wonderful honor of being nominated for a WSU Women of Distinction Award. In celebration of Women’s History Month, Washington State University Vancouver honored me and the other women in the school and community. The ceremony was held on March 29th. On March 22nd, WSU brought all the nominees together for a private networking reception. During that time we met the other nominees and received personalized portfolios and flowers.
Forty-five women were nominated and recognized for inspiring, mentoring and empowering others. The following categories were covered: WSU Vancouver student, WSU Vancouver faculty or staff, and community member (the category in which I was nominated).
The Benefit of Awards
Being recognized in my community for my contributions let’s me know that I’m making a difference and doing a great job. Awards and recognitions are an important part of business growth and development. It lets you know that’s you’re doing something right. In addition, the positive PR that accompanies an award provides more credibility than most advertising. It’s also quite beneficial.
While recognition is not always a motivator it’s definitely a welcomed surprise. Speaking about this process may be considered by some to be self-promotional. However, in my article for the Vancouver Business Journal on the Art of Self-Promotion, it’s an important part of your development as successful business owner and community contributor.
In fact the keynote speaker for the event, Dr. Noel Schulz an advocate for women and minorities in STEM, spoke about the importance of recognition and promotion. She recommended women speak up for and on behalf of the accomplishments of each other so that our contributions can be acknowledged.
Women of Distinction Award Celebration
Here are a few of the highlights from this beautiful event.
In 2009 I was first awarded the Iris Women of Achievement Award for my work in the community. To be honored again, almost 10 years laters, is an incredible experience.
Thank you for following my blogs and reading about the many adventures in my life and business. You are valued and appreciated.
