Top 10 Trends
Overall the theme of current trend is retro. The current styles, designs, and looks are reminiscent of the 1970s. You’ll channel your inner flower child or activist with embroidery, lace, mules, chunky heels and chiffon maxis to military green, bomber jackets, and all things camouflage. Here’s a look at the top 1o trends you will see in your local retailer. Which trend resonate with you?
Denim continues to be a key trend and wardrobe staple. Jeans first hit the scene in 1871. However, over the last four or five seasons they’ve gone from a wardrobe afterthought to the center piece. What’s interesting is the polar divide in the world of denim. On the one hand it’s all about deconstructing the jean with distressing, frayed hems, and now even hem jeans. On the other hand it’s all about the embellishments and making the jean a beautiful work of art. The light wash is also on the rise; however, nothing beats the tried and true dark clean denim jean.
Shoes, jeans, jackets, handbags, you name it, if it can be embroidered it will be. I personally love this trend and find it fun, romantic, statement making. Whether embroidered or embellished you’ll find this trend everywhere. If you want more versatility, then try removable pens or embroidered patches.
Remember those Candies mules of 70s? Well…they’re back! This slide on shoe has received a face lift however, and comes in a variety of styles. Suede, leather, denim, flats or with a heel you can easily pick the mule of your choice.
4. Chunky Heel
The chunky heel (particularly the chunky platform) was a staple in the 1970s. Now this block heel can be found on a variety of shoes and not just a platformed shoe. The chunky heel provides a stable support for the foot and makes walking in a heel easier and much more comfortable.
5. Crossbody Bag
This hands-free bag is perfect when you want to minimize or for vacations. The benefit of the bag is the same limitation…the size. If you decide to go with a cross body this summer be sure it can fit your key items: keys, phone, lipstick, business cards, tissue, and ibuprofen.
6. Bell Sleeve
Statement sleeves are a staple shirt trend but the bell sleeve is by far my absolute favorite. Whether full, short or 3/4 length (my preferred length) this new shape is no longer a passing trend but a must have for a polished and sophisticated look.
Flutter sleeves have turned in to full fledge ruffles, a key trend for spring and summer. You can go bold with layers of ruffles or subtle with a light layer or two but ruffles are decorating necklines, skirts, blouses and even jackets.
Lace is no longer reserved for special occasions or wedding gowns. Ranging from the most delicate and intricate of patterns to the simple eyelet you can find lace on anything from shoes to jackets.
9. Military Green/Camouflage
Military inspired style, along with the color itself, has come in and out of season for the last five years. Well, now it’s back in season in a variety of new ways. Along with this sage color, camouflage has become the new neutral and can be found in a variety of styles. Let your imagination run wile with this trend and have fun with it.
10. Off Shoulder/Cold Shoulder
If there’s one part of the body that looks amazing at all times it’s your shoulders. When Donna Karan introduced this look in 1993 when she dressed Hillary Clinton she created a new phenomena. Today is probably one of the most popular silhouettes because it works for every age, every body shape, and pretty much every occasion.
