On my recent appearance on KATU-ABC AM Northwest, I shared my tips on how to accessorize like a pro. I’ve talked about accessories before on the blog, but this time, I wanted to break down how to find the best accessories for YOU.  Click the image to watch the full episode.

Tips to Accessorizing

Accessorizing like a pro is all about understanding two key things: your natural body harmony colors and your body structure. Once you know these things it will be easy for you to choose the appropriate accessories for you; and YES, you need accessories. Accessories are like icing on a cake and who shows up to an event with an unfrosted cake? When I talk accessories most people think jewelry but accessories are anything that is not part of your main outfit. That includes scarves, belts, shoes, glasses and sunglasses, hats, and handbags. In this episode, I focused on scarves, belts, and jewelry.

If you’re searching for the perfect scarf keep two things in mind: your body harmony colors (your hair, eyes, and skin colors) and your color value (light, bright, medium, muted, or dark). No matter what you’re wearing if the scarf mirrors your coloring it will always look amazing on you. With regard to your color value, consider the intensity of the color in the scarf. You don’t want the scarf to overpower your face and to prevent this you’ll want to ensure that the scarf supports your color value. I didn’t mention this in the episode but you’ll also want to match the texture, size of the pattern, and the amount of fabric with your natural texture and body proportions.

I’m a firm believer in highlighting your waist, your smallest part of your torso. Whether you’re tucking or belting it will always create the illusion of an hourglass figure. In order to determine the right belt width for you do this simple test. Measure the distance with your hands between the bottom of your rib cage and the top of your hip. Depending upon the length of this space you’ll know whether you can wear a thin, medium, or wide width belt. For example, if a wide belt practically covers the length of that space, then go for a thin width belt.

Jewelry is a very personal accessory. It’s the way most people express their personality. There are basic rules of thumb to follow when choosing jewelry but I’m all for owning how you rock your jewels. After all, look at Iris Apfel! Cool skin tones look best in silver, warmer skin tones look best in gold, rose, or bronze jewelry. Diamond and pearls are universal. When thinking about the size of your jewelry consider your body proportion. To not overwhelm a petite frame wear smaller dainty dazzlers and if you’re tall and/or have a large body structure go for bigger statement pieces. Mix metals are very much on trend which gives everyone an opportunity to wear it all.

Use your accessories to tell a story about you! Also, consider your environment and what’s appropriate. Use your accessories to highlight or hide various parts of your body. And know your body colors, value, and proportions so you will always make an informed and wise decision with your accessories!
